A Shift In Business Security

In the not too distant past, a decade or so, security for businesses and corporations was mainly reactive. Security guards were on the premises in case of an emergency or any problems with customers or employees. Surveillance cameras were used to spot any shoplifting or attempted break-ins, and alarms were used to alert police of robberies. That may still be the case in small businesses, but there has been a major shift in global security. Terrorism, unstable political climates, increased public scrutiny, increased competition, and multinational corporations, have changed the approach to safety and security. Measures by security departments within corporations or private security companies have become proactive and preventative.

Security consultants assess risks, security protocols are analyized to make sure they are suitable, and security places a part in most aspects of the business culture. Human resource departments, for example, have procedures devised with the aid of security personnel for background checks, drug testing, and electronic information contracts. IT departments have security software to protect the exposure and access to company files, classified information, and internet use. Audits and reviews of security is completed periodically to ensure there are not breeches in policies or no weaknesses in the systems. Security personnel is often used for investigations, executive protection, and information management, depending on the needs of the corporation.

Personnel of security companies and departments are usually former military or law enforcement officers. Their training and skills makes them best equipped for corporate security tasks. They are disciplined, physically fit, able to think quickly under stress or pressure, and are experienced marksmen. These men and women have first aid and CPR training, and experience in unstable geographic locations. Consultants are often leaders in the fields of information technology (IT), computers, profiling, human behavior, business, psychology, or strategic analysis.

Top level security for businesses, corporations, research and development, and some governments is a business unto itself. Consultants can do an analysis, provide recommendations, and help a business establish their own policies and procedures. Other services may include personal security, special event security, or secured courier service. Some security agencies specialize in training, and others can be hired to provide complete security services and management.
